Secular Franciscans observe the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ
by following the example of St. Francis of Assisi who made Christ
the inspiration and the center of his life with God and people.
Who?
Secular Franciscans are a community of Catholic men and women in the world who seek to pattern their lives after Christ in the spirit of Francis. We believe that as human beings and Christians, we have such a sublime vocation that we cannot fufill it alone. In our common response to the Gospel, we work together in community toward a deep evangelical life and toward communion with all people. This is our way of life.
We are not a club or society. We are united in an international ORDER founded by St. Francis of Assisi; over 750 years ago. There are approximately one thousand fraternities of Secualr Franciscans scattered throughout the United States alone.
What do we do?
We PRAY alone and together.
We LEARN about Christ in the Gospels, Francis, Clare, and ourselves.
We SHARE our journeys, ourselves.
We LIVE WITH THE GOSPELS as our guide - reaching out to others.
How?
We meet on a regular basis (usually the second and fourth Monday of each month) at 7:30 pm in O'Connell Hall. Annual events include an August Family Picnic, Labor Day Mass, an annual Mass each November for the deceased members, and various service projects that enable us to change our lives and our world.
Is God Calling You to the Secular Franciscan Order?
The spirit and life of Saint Francis of Assisi inspired and moved many people. He taught more by the example of his life than by his words. The simplicity of his life, the prayerful, joyful spirit that pervaded all that he did, and his genuine compassion for people touched many hearts.
Lay people saw the life of the friars and came to Francis with the request: "Write a rule of life for us that we can live!" This was the origin of the Secular Franciscan Order, formerly known as the Third Order of Saint Francis.
Today men and women of all ages and walks of life seek to live the Franciscan spirit and charism in the circumstances of their own lives. The rule and life of the Secular Franciscans is this: To observe the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ by following the example of St. Francis of Assisi, who made Christ the inspiration and the center of his life with God and the people. Christ, the gift of the Father's love, is the way to Him, the Truth into which the Holy Spirit leads us, and the life which He has come to give abundantly. Secular Franciscans should devote themselves especially to careful reading of the gospel, going from gospel to life and life to gospel.
